A Centimeter Forward

We had kind of a slack session this last time.

A week passed in the game. Cyprian recovered from his wounds. Oslo and Geyer traded speeder bikes so that Oslo could have a gun on his again. They spent some time rigging the civilian bike so that Geyer could use a trigger sequence to lock the throttle forward and arm two saddlebag satchel charges for detonation on impact. The new recruits started their training. Commander Brassic thanked the group for excellent work in inflicting serious harm to the Empire, while also winning hearts and minds of the locals.

Two communications came in during the week.

Agricultural Minister Mondren called to say that he has fled his city, and wants Rebel support in secretly meeting with other city-states to coordinate efforts against the Empire. He says that there has been renewed security and brutality in the wake of the destruction of the imperial outpost at Vernar.

Glejn returned to his family unit, and says he has a message for the PCs from the bandit leader. Geyer is especially suspicious, as he noticed Hutt-related gang tattoos and symbols among the bandits who attacked the convoy.

The players decided to meet up with Brem Mondren, and work with him to align more leaders against the Empire.

I went ahead and granted 5xp for the session, for everyone. That should bring the total to 30 xp gained since the beginning. 5xp for the first encounter. 10xp for each of the two weeks of the assault, and 5xp for this latest session. Character can increase Skills, or purchase new ones. They can buy new Specialties (talent trees) and new Talents on those trees.

Smugglers and Bandits

This last session, the players had a short encounter helping some Desifen smugglers repel some bandits.

The PCs followed their Chenji'i contact, Mossi Bobert, to the meetup spot for the convoy. Half of the cargo was regular foodstuff, and half was Desifen. This was a slightly higher ratio of contraband, due to the market being stifled by the Empire.

There were three hovertrucks there, with a group of about 16 locals milling about. They were waiting on the fourth truck before they disembarked for the city. He soon arrived, a human named Glej'n. Trucks were loaded, 8 crates to a truck, and the group started off.

A few hours into the journey, one of the trucks started smoking, slowed, and drifted to a halt on the ground. Unsurprising to any of the PC's, it was Glej'n's vehicle. Oslo helped the locals diagnose the problem, and estimated a couple of hours of repair work. About 15 minutes later, dust clouds were spotted on the horizon. Vehicles, approaching fast.

The herders circled the three remaining trucks around the broken one, and they took up defensive positions. There were only about four blaster rifles among them, and a lot of melee weapons. The bandits arrived with eight vehicles, and surrounded the convoy. One of them stepped out with a megaphone, and demanded all of the Desifen. He said they could keep the rest. Glej'n was the first to start unloading a truck to concede to their demands.

Geyer and Lorn intimidated him into revealing that he had betrayed the convoy. Geyer hoisted him easily, and used him as a human shield. He then charged the bandit who was speaking, with Lorn on his heels. Oslo strafed some of the bandit convoy, and Cyprian jumped the ring of vehicles to get behind their inward-focused fire. Blaster shots rang out, Geyer and Lorn were grazed, and a couple of the bandits were hit.

The fight was over quickly, though, as Geyer vaulted over the enemy speeder and skewered the bandit with his sword. The bandit dropped his megaphone, and Lorn caught it before it hit the ground. He claimed to have a thermal detonator, and called for a ceasefire. Everyone complied, uneasily.

They got Cyprian to treat the bandit leader, so he wouldn't bleed out, and said that they would give him 4 crates of cargo, which constituted Glenj'n's share, and told him to get out of there. He said the people he worked for would not be happy with this, but they loaded up the crates and sped off.

Glej'n managed to escape with them.

Oslo eventually found the sabotage, and repairing the vehicle was easy, though time-consuming. The convoy then continued into the evening, when they finally got to the city.

Instead of unloading the cargo themselves, and getting paid their normal full amount by the warehouse fence, there was an imperial customs officer and detachment of stormtroopers guarding the building. The herders received less than they normally would, and they worried about their financial future. Rather than stay in town and waste even more money, the group mounted back up and made the trip back home overnight, arriving just as the sun was coming up.

Everyone got 5xp for the session.

Careers!

I chatted with Matt, and his character makes more sense to me now.

Cyprian Klish : Guardian - Soresu Defender
Oslo Hulsebosch : Ace - Hotshot
Lorn Shard : Sentinel - Shadow
Geyer Krandak : (mecha pilot???)

If you guys want, I can print out the appropriate Career Specialty sheets for your characters, to make it easier to track which Talents you're taking as you progress. As well as being a quick reference to which skills are class skills (the cheap ones).

Numbers!

We finally put numbers to our characters last night, and set things in motion.
AgilityBrawnIntellectWillCunningPresence
Lorn Shard332232
Stealth 2, Ranged(Light)AthleticsDeception, Perception, Skullduggery, Streetwise
Oslo Hulsebosch423222
Piloting(Space) 2, Piloting(Planetary), GunneryMechanicsCool
Geyer Krandak152222
Brawl, Melee 2, ResilienceDiscipline, VigilancePerception
Cyprian Klish224322
Lightsaber, ResilienceMedicineDiscipline, Vigilance 2PerceptionCool

A couple of things I've noticed with this current allocation:
Charlie needs to select two non-career skills, since his species is Human. This means he could pick up Ranged(Light) or Ranged(Heavy) to supplement his Gunnery. Or he can expand to other Intellect skills or something.
Matt's stats don't line up as well as they might with his skill choices. On the one hand, it would make for some good roleplaying situations that weren't max-minned. And having a high Intellect means that his unskilled checks in that area will be generally good. On the other hand, it might become frustrating later.
There's a fair amount of overlap with Discipline, Vigilance, and Perception. This isn't a bad thing. I actually think it could be good. It's new to me, and I'll work hard to provide challenges that play to those strengths.

We set a starting mission goal for the players, and did some equipment requisitioning. The group decided to go help a Chenji'i family deliver an outgoing shipment of Desifen and foodstuffs to the city to be smuggled off-planet, and thus win hearts and minds. The city-state of Chenji'i is furthest from the capitol city of Rekka, but it's unknown what sort of Empire presence will be there, now that the Star Destroyer is in orbit.

To help them get there, they were able to requisition four speeder bikes. An attempt was made to get some grenades, but this request was denied by command. The group was required to take a satchel charge, however, just in case there was a worthy Empire target. Anyone without a ranged weapon was required to check out a blaster or blaster carbine from the armory. Oslo was denied a request to check out a Heavy Repeating Blaster and tripod, and it was pointed out to him that his speeder had a heavy blaster on it that he could use should the need arise.

March Madness

Charlie and Sean were out this week, sadly. Charlie says he'll be back next week, then off again the following one.

Matt, Greg, and I met at the pub and had a good time chatting and playing games. Greg trounced us in the first game of Condottiere. Then we had a longer game of it where Matt maneuvered his way to a solid victory. Following that, we introduced Greg to Quantum, where I won my first game ever. Good times.

We've started a bit of an e-mail discussion about starting equipment and "salary". The Rebellion is like a non-profit organization. You get room, board, equipment enough to fight the Empire, and maybe a small stipend. If you prove yourself, you're allowed to requisition more assets, and maybe get more of a stipend. Roleplaying may help you aquire more gear for use on missions as well.

Starting characters can have 1000 credits worth of equipment. They may also start with a personal starfighter, the quality of which will depend upon the proven skill of the character. A basic freighter will be provided to any remaining characters who do not wish to pilot a starfighter. I was thinking of the G9 Rigger. Stats below:

Silhouette 4
Speed 2
Handling -2
Defense : 1 fore, 1 aft
Armor 2
Hull Threshold 25
System Strain Threshold 15
Crew 2
Passengers 6 (consumables for 6 months)
Class 3 hyperdrive (no backup) with built in navicomputer
Dorsal auto-blasters, Forward arc, 3 damage, crit 5, Close range
Starboard Outrigger turreted blaster cannon (no left arc), 4 damage, crit 4, Close range
Ventral wing-mounted light blaster cannon, Forward arc, 4 damage, crit 4, Close range (this wing folds up under the craft during landing)

The main benefit of the freighter is that you can stand up, stretch out, and actually sleep lying down. The downside is that it's slow and unmaneuverable.

The main benefit of starfighters is their speed and maneuverability, and you only have to smell your own farts. The downside is that you can't get up and move around for the entire duration of your hyperspace voyage. Hope you like the colostomy bag and catheter built into the flight suit. Hope you're wearing a flight suit.

Edging Forward

Matt has a slightly different direction he's thinking about going in with his character. A Jedi apprentice who fled with his master during Order 66. They were hunted down years later, and the master was slain. Matt's char fled and cut himself off from the Force entirely, and hid the sabers in a mine. A decade later, when Alderaan was destroyed, he still felt it in the Force, and took that as a call to action - his destiny was to join the Rebellion and fight injustice. He was on the assassination mission to take out the Moff, but went mainly because he felt the Force called him. And he was more interested in freeing slaves than assassinating anyone.

We'll talk more when we'll all in session together, to knit together this new character with the existing ones. And we need to come up with the stats for our characters. There was some discussion about distributing points, but no one wrote anything down.

I'm dropping the Obligation, Duty, and Morality systems presented in the core books. I like what they represent, in terms of creating motivations and relationships between characters and the game world. I think we're doing a good job of coming up with those on our own. I don't think we need more fiddly numbers associated with them.

If players start using Dark Side force points to power their abilities, I *will* be tracking that, and I will try to present options for redemption, or at least remorse. And if it gets too bad, then I will ask that the person either redeem or relinquish their character. But I'm not going to make the players try to track numbers on it. And I'm not going to allow players to game bad behavior for maximum firepower.

I'm also going to give players the option to describe their own failures in a creative fashion. I wanted to attach XP rewards when the players came up with exceptional descriptions. But it makes some of the players uncomfortable. The idea that some players might earn more XP than others doesn't appeal to everyone's sense of fairness.

The question I started asking the players last night was : What sort of tasks do you want to be doing most or best during the campaign? I'd like to get the players to think more concretely about the ways in which they will go about pursuing their goals, and tie that to Skill choices. Which in turn influences allocation of Attributes and choice of Careers and Specialties.

We had a good night chatting, and Sean has now seen Episode 7! So we can talk freely about things now. Looking forward to next session!
